Scope of Impact Assessment in Benin and Senegal
Getting Young African Women to Work: Scaling Batonga’s Economic Empowerment and Leadership Model, is a four-year partnership between the Batonga Foundation and the Mastercard Foundation under the Young Africa Works strategy. Launched in Benin in September 2021 and expanded to Senegal in October 2022, the initiative aims to increase dignified and fulfilling employment opportunities for young Africans—at least 70 percent of them young women—while advancing gender equality and strengthening community well-being. The partnership delivers two flagship programs: Adolescent Girls Leadership (AGL), which equips girls aged 14–18 to become leaders and agents of change in their communities; and Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE), which supports young women aged 18–35 to build financial literacy, business skills, and entrepreneurial confidence.

Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) complemented these narratives by visually identifying indirect and longer-term effects. Facilitated group mapping and thematic analysis helped trace pathways of change and reflect on the program’s broader reach. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including correlation testing, were used to examine trends and relationships among key indicators.
Outcomes of Impact Assessment in Benin and Senegal
This evaluation documented the extent and nature of change generated by the interventions at individual, household, and community levels. It identified progress in agency, social capital, knowledge, skills, and economic empowerment, and examined how Batonga’s model influences social norms, community attitudes, and broader systemic change. The findings also informed strategic learning and the design of the partnership’s next phase, helping Batonga and its partners continue to catalyze lasting improvements in women’s livelihoods, leadership, and equality.
